Background information

Electronic components, mostly mounted on printed circuit boards (PCBs) are used in a vast array of products and devices, e.g. in Industrial Equipment, Networking and Communication Equipment, Computer and Office Products, Medical Devices and Consumer electronics and home appliances. The global market size of Electrical and Electronic Equipment (EEE) is estimated at $ 1.500 billion, growing with approximately $ 100 billion each year.

A large proportion of EEE has a short life span, and is often perceived as being difficult or expensive to repair. Brands spend billions creating consumer demand for the latest models, leaving older technology obsolete and unwanted even when it remains serviceable. After its use, EEE is disposed of and becomes Electronic Waste, often shortened to e-waste (source: https://theroundup.org/global-e-waste-statistics/).

The Challenge

The third edition of The Challenge, focuses on the sustainability of the electronics industry. MACH Technology has the ambition to attain the highest level of circularity in our designs and manufacturing processes. The main question is: how can MACH Technology optimise the integration of this in their current operations?

  • How can the design process be optimised regarding circularity?
  • How can MACH Technology expand & improve their facilities to offer customers a more sustainable approach to production?
  • What synergy can MACH Technology create by looking at the full value chain?
  • What competences and technologies are needed for such a transition?

The competing teams are challenged to provide MACH Technology with a surprising, innovative and feasible answer to these questions.

This is a full day event, taking place on Tuesday the 23th of May. We will ensure to have key note speakers to help you get up-to-speed on the topic. Afterwards, you will break-out into smaller groups to stimulate out-of-the-box design thinking. By the end of the day, you will present the outcome to your peers and Mach Technology Group, checking the feasibility & usability of the outcome.

About MACH Technology

This time our challenge comes from CDS Electronics, part of the MACH Technology Group, a leading designer and producer of a wide variety of electronic systems. MACH Technology provides development for these systems, and also takes care of the assembly of components on Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs), using a range of different technologies.
